Spillway closes - effects watched
The opening of a major spillway near New Orleans poured much less river water into Lake Pontchartrain than it did in 1997, when a major algae bloom caused several fish kills.  That's welcomed news for lake advocates, who worry the combination of the nutrient-rich river water and hot weather will cause fish-killing algae blooms.
Gas tax money running out for two highway projects in New Orleans area
Income from a special 4-cent state gasoline tax is not keeping up with soaring construction costs, meaning two New Orleans area transportation projects are in jeopardy. Judge delays Marinello trial four months
Jefferson Parish Judge Conn Regan granted a continuance motion in the murder trial of former New Orleans broadcaster Vince Marinello.  The new trial date is set for September 15.  It was to have started Monday in Lafayette.

Marinello prosecutors not against trial delay
Jefferson parish prosecutors say they have no objection to delaying former broadcaster Vince Marinello's murder trial.
In papers filed Thursday, prosecutors explain why they were late in providing evidence to the defense team. That evidence, which includes an 18-month-old DNA report prosecutors received only two weeks ago, led Marinello's attorneys to ask the judge to put off the trial.
