Louisiana State Police has re-opened Interstates 10 and 55, and Airline Highway, after closing those highways fearing a pilot was attempting to make an emergency landing on the Bonnett Carre Spillway.
It turns out the pilot of the single engine aircraft was able to land safely alongside the Interstate 10 near Gramercy.
"There were no injuries, everything was taken care of, there was no property damage, but nevertheless, we took all kinds of safety precautions," said Trooper Rick Meyer with Louisiana State Police Troop B.
The pilot of the single engine plane reportedly radioed air traffic controllers in Baton Rouge, indicating that he had mechanical problems and would attempt an emergency landing on Interstate 10. Air traffic controllers in New Orleans, the aircraft's destination, lost contact with the pilot shortly thereafter.
Coincidentally, at the same time the single engine aircraft made its safe emergency landing, a military helicopter made a safe emergency landing on the Beau Chene Golf Course in Mandeville. Nobody was hurt.
"They landed on hole number nine on the Oak Golf Course right near the pond at Beau Chene," said Golf Course representative Bill Mair.
Officials say the helicopter reported mechanical difficulties shortly before making the emergency landing, and was able to take off shortly after making its emergency landing. |
