Tropical storm forms in Caribbean

Tropical Storm Dolly has formed in the western Caribbean sea

The National Hurricane center issued a tropical storm warning Sunday for the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from the border with Belize to Campeche, Mexico.

At 10:45 a.m. Sunday, the center of the storm was about 270 miles east of Chetumal, Mexico, and 230 miles southeast of Cozumel.

Maximum sustained winds are about 45 miles per hour.

Dolly is moving toward the northwest at 17 miles per hour, and forecasters expect it to continue moving in this direction for the next two days.

This is the fourth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through the end of November.

Tropical Storm Cristobal has gained a little strength as it cuts a slow path off the North Carolina coast.

It's expected to dump several inches of rain in parts of the drought-stricken state. The storm's heaviest winds and rains have stayed well offshore, though it's led to strong rip currents along the beaches.

Cristobal was about 105 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras this morning. The National Hurricane Center says it's moving at about 6 miles an hour with maximum sustained winds of about 50 miles per hour. The storm will likely skirt the Outer Banks today.

Tropical storm warnings remain in effect from northern South Carolina up to the North Carolina-Virginia state line.
