St. Bernard Parish to pay Mangano trial costs

The state attorney general's office says Saint Bernard Parish government must pay the West Feliciana Parish Police Jury $15,837 for expenses incurred during the Saint Rita Nursing Home trial.

The negligent homicide trial for the nursing home's owners, Sal and Mabel Mangano, was moved from Chalmette to Saint Francisville after the judge agreed it would be difficult to seat an unbiased jury in Saint Bernard.

The Manganos were found innocent in September of 35 counts each of negligent homicide and 24 counts each of cruelty to the infirm.

The charges against the Manganos stemmed from flooding that swamped the nursing home near Poydras during Hurricane Katrina.
