Severe weather leaves area, power being restored

Officials with the three major utilities serving the metro area says power is being restored to the tens of thousands of customers who lost electricity during Thursday morning's storms.

Meanwhile, forecasters says the strongest storms have cleared the area, though more rain is possible Friday.

As of late Thursday afternoon, just under 6,100 customers were without power on the Northshore.  The Washington/St. Tammany Electric Cooperative reported 2,400 customers in the dark, mostly in St. Tammany Parish.  And CLECO officials say 3,700 customers are without power, and the number was climbing.  At the peak of the storm, over 16,000 customers lost power on the northshore.

On the Southshore, Entergy reports 900 customers without power in the Kenner and Metairie area, mainly due to downed trees.  That's down from a high of 21,000 customers at the peak of the storm.

Forecasters say the worst of the severe weather is over, though more showers are possible Friday.

"There's just a 30 percent chance of showers and storms tonight, but it will be humid," said Channel 4 meteorologist Jonathan Myers.  "On Friday, there's a 60 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, and some of them could have heavy rain and high winds, same as we saw today."
