Plan to close railroad crossings could meet resistance

A series of fatal crashes at train crossings on the Northshore led to an expedited meeting today between state engineers and officials in Tangiphoa Parish.
The State Department of Transportaton has recommended six crossings be shutdown. Parish President Gordon Burgess says he thought the meeting was productive, but he plans on public meetings with the Council before any action is taken.
''My gut feeling right now is a possible two closures, maybe three, but we're hoping to have zero closures,'' said Burgess.
Burgess says despite safety concerns, folks who live between Amite and Independence have worries about getting to their homes quickly, and making sure emergency services aren't delayed at gated crossings.
''People who live around that crossing will have real concern about emergency response," said Burgess.
Burgess says before any action is taken, he wants meetings with Council members and the public.
