A New Orleans police officer has been suspended from duty after being booked with DWI following a May 1st collision with a Causeway Police car on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
State police say officer Roy Caballero was driving his personal vehicle north on the bridge about five miles from the Metairie shoreline when his pickup swerved from the right lane into the left lane and into the Causeway cruiser's path.
Causeway Police officer Blake Kirby, who was chasing a speeder in the left lane, tried to brake to avoid Caballero. Causeway Police Chief Felix Loicano says Kirby was unable to stop in time, and Caballero's truck sideswiped Kirby's car; Caballero's truck then hit the bridge railing.
Caballero, a two-year member of the New Orleans Police Department, was off duty and not in uniform.
Troopers arrested Caballero after he failed a field sobriety test.
In addition to the DWI charge, Caballero was cited for improper lane use.
