NOPD: Crime rate down in first quarter


The New Orleans Police Department released its crime statistics for the first quarter of 2008, which show a 19 percent decline in the per capita crime rate compared to the first three months of 2007.

But the per capita crime numbers are based on a population increase of 50,000 residents compared to the first quarter of 2007.

There were 43 murders in New Orleans in the first quarter of 2008, compared to 48 in 2007.  There were sharp increases in armed robberies and rapes, and declines in all other major categories.

The total number of reported crimes was down four percent in the first quarter of 2008 compared to 2007.
