You may have heard this is the final season for one of the most legendary stadium's in the world, Yankee Stadium. Well, college baseball's equivalent to the House that Babe Ruth built is also calling it a career. This is the final regular season weekend series for Alex Box Stadium.
The Box isn't as nice as some of the new stadiums that have sprung up on college campuses across the country, but the games that were played on that field are legendary. LSU has won 70% of its games on Skip Bertman Drive and its next win will be number 1,200.
The Box has hosted 17 regionals, three super-regionals, and numerous fantastic finishes and performances. Athletics Director and former skipper Skip Bertman says one of his favorite memories is when LSU scored 18 runs on 13 hits in the seventh inning to beat Georgia Tech 29 to 13 in the regional championship game. That was in 1996, the next season, LSU outlasted Long Beach State in five hours to win 14 to seven in 11 innings. The Tigers would later sweep South Alabama to advance to Omaha.
Many LSU baseball fans can go on and on about their memories, and the memories might not come to an end this weekend. Like previous Tiger teams, LSU is playing its best baseball in May. Coach Paul Mainieri's squad has won nine in a row and moved into the top 25 rankings for the first time in over two years. There's talk LSU could host an 18th regional, and give Tiger fans another chance to salute on of college baseball's most legendary venues.
