The House Ways and Means Committee is scheduled today to hear a Senate bill that phases out Lousiana's personal income taxes within ten years.
Governor Bobby Jindal says he'll sign the bill if lawmakers make substantial cuts in state spending to offset the billions in tax revenues that would be lost if income taxes are ended .
A revenue report says getting rid of the income tax would cost Louisiana coffers about four billion dollars over ten years.
The Senate has unanimously approved the bill.
Supporters say the state has to get rid of income taxes to compete with Texas and Florida.
Opponents say it will simply lead to other tax increases.
