House committee advances bill raising insurance minimums

A state House committee has passed a bill that would raise the mininum insurance coverage Louisiana motorists must carry on their vehicles.
Then-Governor Kathleen Blanco vetoed a similar bill last year, because she felt raising the cost of mininum auto insurance would be too costly for many drivers.
"This would drive the cost up, and add to an instant impact to people who can least afford it," said Insurance lobbyist Jay Brignac.
But the bill's author, Baton Rouge Representative Erich Ponti, says the legislation would get Louisiana's mininum coverages to the same level as neighboring states.
