Gas prices in the New Orleans are pushing $3.55 for a gallon of regular unleaded, and some people are opting not to pay those prices, but go for a cheaper ride.
Zack Materne works at a motorcycle and scooter shop in the CBD and says his sales have gone up.
He says, "We've seen an increase of about 75 percent over the past year."
Materne says scooters get about 70 miles to a gallon of gasoline and hold just under two and a half gallons in the tank.
Listen to Zack Materne talk about how many people are riding scooters and motorcycles.
Materne says people are opting to ride scooters for local trips like to and from work, making groceries, and other shopping.
He says scooters have more storage than a motorcycle, making toting bags home.
He says unlike a car, the mileage on a scooter is great, but like a car, owners still need insurance.
Materne says they also need to wear helmets and should take a motorcycle safety class in riding a scooter since there is an advantage it.
He says, "The motorcycle safety class not only helps you get your (motorcycle) endorsement, it also helps you in training and it helps you with your insurance rates as well.
Materne says the motorcycle safety class is recommended for people who buy a scooter.
He says even used scooters only last a few hours since they sell so quickly right now with gas prices being up.
