Attorneys for former broadcaster Vince Marinello have asked a Jefferson Parish judge to push back Monday's start date for their client's second degree murder trial.
According to court documents, Marinello's defense team indicates they need more time to review documents of evidence they received April 28. Arguments will be heard Friday afternoon in Lafayette, and Judge Conn Regan is expected to issue a ruling that day.
Sources tell WWL First News that witnesses for the trial have been asked by prosecutors if they will be available to appear in July, but defense attorneys say they do not expect that long of a delay. The trial was to start with jury selection Monday in Lafayette.
Marinello is accused of gunning down his estranged wife in August, 2006. In the 19 months since the incident, the start date of the trial has been delayed several times, with Marinello changing defense teams three times, and lengthy appeals processes regarding the trial's venue and the admissibility of evidence.
