Corps holds meeting about fixing Westbank flooding

The Army Corps of Engineers is hosting a public meeting tonight to discuss the area's levees and floodwalls. The meeting will be at Our Lady of Holy Cross College's Moreau Center, 4123 Woodland Drive in Algiers.

The purpose of the meeting is to allow the public an opportunity to provide input on development of the hurricane system, particularly the westbank. "All the hurricane projects that deal with the Harvey Canal the Algiers Canal and the Hero Canal/Oakville area," says the Corps' Gib Owen.

"We're getting closer to identifying the engineering solutions that will reduce risk to communities on the Orleans and Jefferson Westbank and Plaquemines Parish," said Julie Vignes, senior project manager for the Westbank levee system. "This information is most relevant to people living in Algiers, Harvey, Gretna, Oakville and Belle Chase."

A Corps-staffed open house begins at 6. A formal presentation begins at 7 p.m. and is followed by a discussion period.
