Algae bloom poses earlier than expected threat to Lake Pontchartain

The impact of last month's Bonnet Carre Spillway opening on Lake Pontchartrain is now being seen, with algae blooms developing in the lake much earlier than expected.

The oxygen-robbing algae puts the lake at risk of a fish kill.

"We're really going to have to watch the lake, probably until mid-June, to make sure we get through this," said Carlton Dufrechou of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation.
