The Hornets continue to add to an already impressive postseason resume, spanking the defending NBA Champion San Antonio 102-84 in game 2 Monday night at the Hive. The win gives the Hornets a 2-0 lead in their 2nd round best-of-seven NBA Playoff series against the Spurs.
"We were able to protect home that's the biggest thing," said a satisfied Hornets head coach Byron Scott who was quick to point out the series wasn't won just yet. "You're still playing against the best team in the league. They're the best team until somebody can knock them off in the playoff in a four out of seven game series." San Antonio has never come back from a two-game deficit in the playoffs in their franchise history.
LISTEN TO COACH SCOTT
The Hornets entered the match-up with the Spurs as underdogs to many in the national media, a role they played in their first-round match-up against Dallas, a team they dispatched in five games. "I am proud of the way our team has played. We still got a lot of people out there that doubt us and I think again that's what fuels these guys," said Scott. "We've been proving people wrong all season long so we're just going to keep playing basketball."
One player that is playing some serious basketball is CP3. Point guard Chris Paul continued his amazing performances in the playoffs with a 30 points, 12 assists performance. "We knew that they were going to be really aggressive on D-West," said Paul. "Ever since game 1 coach and them were telling me that I would have to be more aggressive tonight so I just tried to pick my spots and get everybody involved and score when they left me open."
LISTEN TO CP3 AND D-WEST
"He's an MVP candidate. MVP candidates have an impact on the game, big time," said San Antonio head coach Greg Popovich. Paul's quickness in and out the lane and dishing passes seemed as if the Hornets were still taking on the Mavericks at times. Forward Peja Stojakovic put in 25 points as he connected on five of seven three point shots taken.
San Antonio as team did not have the same stroke as Stojakovic's as they were a brutal 8-of-27 from the behind the arc. "They obviously have done an excellent job defensively frustrating all of us," said Spurs forward Tim Duncan who followed up game one's five-point performance with an 18-point effort in game two." Their double teaming, their shifting and everything that happens seems like they come the other way and they're not missing shots. That stacked on top of each other it just makes the whole game very frustrating."
Also with another stellar game were the 17,927 fans in attendance, " It's unbelievable the way our crowd is during the game," Paul said of the rally towel waiving faithful. "You never want the game to end when out crowd is the way that they are and we're just riding the wave right now."
The Hornets are indeed feeling good about things as they should knowing that the a veteran Spurs team must now win four of the next five games but Scott insists his team is not overconfident , "The series gets tougher going into San Antonio. It's going to be a lot like here they're going to have the crowd behind them so, we got to be ready to play."
"We won down there earlier in the year so we know we can we in there," said West of the upcoming task. "I think our objective becomes the same as theirs was, you know you want to get one. We're going to go in there and play like we don't have anything to lose and try to get one."
Game 3 is tomorrow night with a 8:30 tip time while, Game 4 will be Sunday at 7p.m.
